Research Methodology of LIC New Bima Platinum
The LIC New Bima Platinum Plan offers periodic income benefits after the completion of the Premium Paying Term, along with a maturity benefit at the end of the policy term.
To evaluate whether these benefits provide reasonable value, let us examine the cash flows using an illustration from the policy brochure.
Benefit Illustration – IRR Analysis of LIC New Bima Platinum
Consider a 35-year-old male opting for a Basic Sum Assured of ₹16.13 lakh, with a Premium Paying Term of 12 years and a Policy Term of 25 years.
The annual premium is ₹1.46 lakh.
| Male | 35 years |
| Sum Assured | ₹ 16,13,150 |
| Policy Term | 25 years |
| Premium Paying Term | 12 years |
| Annualised Premium | ₹ 1,46,650 |
After completing the premium payments, the policy provides an annual Regular Income Benefit of ₹1 lakh and a Booster Income Benefit of ₹7 lakh, as specified in the illustration.
At maturity, the policy pays ₹19.15 lakh.
However, the estimated Internal Rate of Return (IRR) for these cash flows is only 5.41% as per the LIC New Bima Platinum Plan maturity calculator, which may be less attractive than the returns available from alternative debt instruments.

Furthermore, the life cover and periodic income may be inadequate to meet the policyholder’s financial needs.
Given the long policy duration, inflation can significantly erode the purchasing power of the fixed income benefits and maturity proceeds.
Overall, the plan may not be an efficient choice for individuals seeking adequate life insurance protection and long-term wealth creation through a well-balanced financial portfolio.
LIC New Bima Platinum Vs. Other Investments
Analysing cash flows and comparing returns with alternative investment options is essential for making informed financial decisions.
To ensure a fair comparison, we follow the same evaluation methodology used in our earlier analyses.
The LIC New Bima Platinum Plan combines life insurance coverage with periodic income benefits. To assess its effectiveness, let us separate the insurance and investment components and evaluate them independently.
LIC New Bima Platinum Vs. Pure-term + Equity Mutual Fund
A pure-term life insurance policy with a sum assured of ₹25 lakh costs an annual premium of ₹18,100, with a 10-year Premium Paying Term and a 25-year Policy Term.
The remaining ₹1.28 lakh per year can be invested separately, based on the investor’s risk appetite.
The accumulated corpus can then be used to fund periodic withdrawals, replicating the income benefits offered by LIC New Bima Platinum.
| Pure Term Life Insurance Policy | |
| Sum Assured | ₹ 25,00,000 |
| Policy Term | 25 years |
| Premium Paying Term | 10 years |
| Annualised Premium | ₹ 18,100 |
| Investment | ₹ 1,28,550 |
For this illustration, we assume that the remaining ₹1.28 lakh per year is invested in an equity mutual fund. After 12 years, the investment grows to ₹35.17 lakh.
After accounting for capital gains tax, the post-tax corpus is ₹32.90 lakh, which is subsequently invested in a fixed-income instrument yielding 7% annually.

To replicate the cash flows of LIC New Bima Platinum, ₹1 lakh is withdrawn annually to match the plan’s regular income benefit.
At the end of the 25-year period, the remaining corpus is withdrawn as a lump sum, comparable to the plan’s maturity benefit.
Under these assumptions, the alternative strategy delivers an estimated IRR of 8.01%, significantly higher than the 5.41% offered by LIC New Bima Platinum.
Furthermore, if the annual withdrawals are deferred or avoided, the corpus has the potential to grow further through compounding.
This approach offers the additional advantages of greater liquidity, flexibility in withdrawals, and independent control over investments.
Separating insurance from investments may therefore provide better value than combining both within the rigid structure of LIC New Bima Platinum.
Final Verdict on LIC New Bima Platinum
The LIC New Bima Platinum Plan allows policyholders to pay premiums for a limited period and receive a fixed income thereafter. An additional Booster Income Benefit is also payable once during the payout period.
While the promise of guaranteed income may appeal to those seeking predictable cash flows, our analysis indicates that the plan’s returns may not justify the investment.
The plan’s limited liquidity and relatively low returns further weaken its appeal as a wealth-building option.
Consequently, it may not be the most suitable choice for investors seeking to balance income generation, capital growth, and financial flexibility and it also has a high agent commission.
A more effective approach to meeting regular income needs is to build an adequate corpus through investments aligned with your risk tolerance and financial goals.
This approach offers greater flexibility over withdrawals and investment choices, while a separate pure-term life insurance policy can provide adequate financial protection for your family. A well-diversified investment portfolio can then focus on long-term wealth creation.
Do Quora, Facebook, and Twitter have the final say when it comes to financial advice?
Since a systematic withdrawal from an insurance policy may not suit every investor, consulting a Certified Financial Planner (CFP) can help you identify the right combination of insurance and investments.
A personalised, goal-based financial plan can help you balance regular income, liquidity, risk management, and long-term financial security.
